Carrie Sommer, the owner
of Sommer Designs, never set out to be an accessories designer. After
graduating from UCLA (a long, long time ago) she began her career in
advertising and later became a paralegal. Soon thereafter, marriage and
children followed, and life took on a steady, if not chaotic, flow.
Being the type A that she is, Carrie was unable to sit still for long
and began freelance writing, which morphed into designing newsletters,
brochures and finally websites.
Carrie started Sommer Designs in 1999
as a web design studio, dedicated to helping small businesses achieve a
web presence when the Internet was still just a blip on the map.
But she found her
true calling a few years later when she made a diaper bag for a friend,
and her business was redefined nearly overnight. Her line includes
handmade handbags and home accessories, and Carrie gets to indulge her
obsession with color and pattern everyday! There is always room for more
fabric, and she rationalizes that since she is selling it, she can
continue to buy it. Eye-catching fabrics and crisp, traditional shapes
have become her trademark, and the combinations of patterns add a touch
of whimsy.
Check out
her blog,
where Carrie tries her best to keep everyone in the loop on life behind
the scenes, the crazy ups and downs of a small, independent design business,
projects that range from refashioning old & forgotten clothing to
dealing with her completely backward attempts at crochet, learning to
knit and how dinner is rarely on time.
Carrie lives
in Southern California with her husband, three teenage sons, two silly
dogs and a cat who will not admit to ownership.
